Proposed Vikings trade adds $9 million Titans quarterback as J.J. McCarthy insurance

Proposed Vikings trade adds million Titans quarterback as J.J. McCarthy insurance

Many in and around the Tennessee Titans’ organization had high hopes for quarterback Will Levis.

The team drafted the former Kentucky quarterback in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Levis originally backed up veteran Ryan Tannehill before eventually taking the job over and starting nine games as a rookie.

Levis flashed during his first campaign and the Titans hoped the passer would take another step in his sophomore year. Instead, Levis struggled mightily, getting benched in favor of veteran Mason Rudolph at one point.

Now, it appears likely that the Titans will move on from Levis at some point. Moe Moton of Bleacher Report recently proposed a few trades, and Moton included one move involving Levis.

Moton has the Titans trading Levis and a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for a 2025 fifth-round pick. Regarding this proposal, Moton offered the following:

They may prefer an experienced quarterback who can push J.J. McCarthy for the starting job rather than someone who expects to start over him. If so, a young signal-caller who’s played in a notable number of regular-season games would be an ideal addition.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Titans “would like to transition” from Will Levis.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler told The Dan Patrick Show that the Titans would be “pretty comfortable” with taking Cam Ward at No. 1, which would explain why they may want to move on from Levis, who started in 21 games over the last two seasons.

If McCarthy has a setback in his recovery from two meniscus tears or a rough offseason, Levis can provide veteran insurance until the Vikings get their quarterback of the future ready to lead the huddle.

In 2024, Levis threw for 2,091 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Levis’ 18 total turnovers were tied for the most among all quarterbacks.

The Vikings, meanwhile, are reportedly set to roll with 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, who suffered a season-ending injury last preseason which led to the team rolling with veteran Sam Darnold.

Darnold impressed in 2024, throwing for a career-high 4,319 yards with 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Instead of handing the veteran a big deal in free agency this offseason, the Vikings allowed Darnold to leave for the Seattle Seahawks.

Fellow veteran quarterback Daniel Jones, who joined the Vikings during the 2024 season, also left in free agency, signing with the Indianapolis Colts.

As of now, McCarthy and journeyman Brett Rypien are the only passers on Minnesota’s roster. As Moton mentioned, a player like Levis, who wouldn’t expect to start, could be the perfect insurance option for the Vikings.
