The Pittsburgh Steelers must figure out their quarterback situation sooner rather than later. Though the team is still waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision regarding his football future, it would be wise for Pittsburgh to start weighing other potential quarterback options.
Even if the Steelers finally sign Rodgers, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport believes general manager Omar Khan should explore a trade for Indianapolis Colts signal-caller Anthony Richardson.
Frankly, all the drama surrounding the pursuit of Rodgers should be a red flag for the team—drama and the 41-year-old seem to go hand-hand these days. And even if he does sign in Pittsburgh, he’s only a short-term fix.
If the Steelers believe in Richardson’s talent, they could obtain a former top-five pick who could still be under team control for three more seasons at a reasonable amount.
Richardson has had a tumultuous first two seasons in the NFL, as the 2023 No.4 overall pick missed most of his rookie campaign due to a shoulder injury and was uninspiring in 11 starts in 2024, tossing eight touchdowns to 12 interceptions with an abysmal 47.7% completion rate. He was benched for Joe Flacco at one point during the season.
Due to the signing of Daniel Jones and his lackluster performance in 2024, the Colts may be willing to move on from Richardson for the right price.
If Richardson hits the market, the Steelers should at least think about acquiring the former Florida Gator. Richardson isn’t capable of being a reliable starting quarterback yet, but the 22-year-old could serve as a high-upside backup and eventually develop into a future starter for Pittsburgh.
Signing Rodgers and then trading a Day 3 selection to Indianapolis for Richardson could be a possible path the Steelers go down. The dual-threat quarterback could learn a ton from Rodgers, and it would set Pittsburgh up with a short-term and potential long-term solution at the sport’s most vital position.

Richardson’s future in Indianapolis may be a bit murky, but we still believe he will be the Colts’ starting signal-caller in 2025, though the pressure is on for him to perform in Year 3. So, the Steelers will have to look elsewhere to address the quarterback room.
