Proposed Dolphins trade adds $9 million quarterback as insurance for Tua Tagovailoa

Proposed Dolphins trade adds million quarterback as insurance for Tua Tagovailoa

Last season, the Miami Dolphins finished with an 8-9 record, in second place in the AFC East (behind the Buffalo Bills) and outside of the playoffs for the first time since Mike McDaniel took over as the team’s head coach in 2022.

A big part of Miami’s struggles was the absence of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who, once again, missed time due to a concussion. The Dolphins were 6-5 in Tagovailoa’s starts and 2-4 when Tyler Huntley or Skylar Thompson were under center.

Tagovailoa has missed significant time (14 games) over the last four seasons due to injuries, and Miami hasn’t performed well with other quarterbacks running the offense. That’s why it may be smart for McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier to look into adding another quarterback with starting experience.

Over the weekend, A to Z Sports’ Easton Freeze identified the Dolphins as a team that may make sense as a trade partner for the Tennessee Titans, who may move on from quarterback Will Levis.

Levis, 25, started his collegiate career at Penn State from 2018-20 before transferring to Kentucky for his final two seasons in college football.

The Titans selected Levis in the second round (No. 33 overall) of the 2023 NFL draft and originally sat him on the bench behind Ryan Tannehill. The former Wildcat went on to play in nine games as a rookie, leading Tennessee to a 3-6 record in his starts while completing 58.4% of his passes for 1,808 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

Levis entered the 2024 season as the team’s starter, but due to injuries and poor performance, he appeared in just 12 games, leading the Titans to a 2-10 record in his starts and completing 63.1% of his passes for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Pro Football Focus gave Levis a 54.9 overall grade for his performance last year, ranking him 60th out of 75 qualified quarterbacks. He also received a 54.6 passing grade (62nd) and a 58.2 rushing grade (52nd).

No, Levis hasn’t been great in his two seasons in the NFL, but with starting experience, he could at least battle with the newly signed Zach Wilson for the backup duties behind Tagovailoa. That’s a much better situation than relying on Thompson.
