Premier League club submit application to expand home by over 15,000 seats and open doors to non-footballing events

LEEDS are looking to expand Elland Road by over 15,000 seats as they aim to host non-footballing events.

The newly-promoted Premier League side have submitted plans to boost capacity to 53,000.

Elland Road, which was built in 1897 and became Leeds’ home in 1919, currently holds just under 38,000 seats.

But chiefs feel the stadium could do with a new look as they look to cement their place in the top flight.

Daniel Farke’s men hope to expand the West Stand from 8,000 seats to 17,750.

While the North Stand’s capacity could jump from 10,414 to 15,300.

A total of 53,000 seats would make Elland Road the seventh-biggest football arena in the country.

Club chiefs also want to hold other entertainment events at the stadium in a bid to boost revenue.

An application has now been submitted to Leeds City Council.

It revealed that Leeds want to host up to eight non-football events each year.

And the club hope to receive a response within 13 weeks.

Should it prove to be successful, renovations will start in 2026.

Leeds are hoping it will be approved after public consultations showed that 98 per cent of respondents were in favour of the plans.

There are currently 26,000 supporters on a waiting list for season tickets at Elland Road.

And the capacity boost would go some way towards meeting their needs.

Leeds’ chief business officer Morrie Eisenberg said the plans will “revitalise” the arena and “preserve the unique history and heritage it holds.”

He added: “(It will) also provide great economic benefits to the local community and will be a catalyst for a regeneration of the area.”
