Premier League club hand out 14 retrospective league winner’s medals decades after triumphs

LIVERPOOL have handed league winner’s medals to 14 former players decades after they helped the Reds lift the title.

The medals were specially made and dished out at an emotional ceremony at Anfield to honour stars who were cruelly snubbed under old rules that set strict appearance limits.

Each medal is engraved with the player’s name and the season they helped Liverpool to glory, even if they didn’t hit the appearance threshold back then.

Reds legend Sir Kenny Dalglish handed out the honours, joined by club chief Jonathan Bamber.

Among those finally recognised were David Fairclough, Alan Kennedy, Terry McDermott and Jan Molby, all key men during Liverpool’s golden years.

John Wark even picked up two medals, having played nine times in both the 1983-84 and 1985-86 title-winning campaigns.

Other players to finally get their medal moment include David Hodgson 1983-84 (5 apps), Chris Lawler-1963-64 (6 apps, collected by his son), Ronny Rosenthal-1989-90 (8 apps), Paul Walsh-1987-88 (8 apps)

Four stars who couldn’t attend the event will have their medals sent out.

They were Steve Heighway, Colin Irwin, Sammy Lee all from the 1979-80 season and as well as Alec Lindsay from 1975-76 season.

And in a touching tribute, a posthumous medal was given to the family of Joey Jones, who made 13 appearances in the 1975-76 campaign.

Bamber said: “It was an emotional night for many.

“These players played a real part in Liverpool’s history and we’re proud to finally honour them properly.”

The recognition comes as the club celebrates its 20 top-flight titles, with these players now officially part of that glittering legacy.
