Pre-season friendly AXED as torrential rain and thunderstorms batter UK with fears more games will be hit

A PRE-SEASON match between Portsmouth and Crawley Town has been postponed hours before kick-off due to torrential rain.

Pompey had been due to meet the League Two side in Sussex in their latest warm-up game at 3pm on Saturday.

A pitch inspection this morning at Broadfield Stadium found unplayable water-logged turf.

Crawley have confirmed fans who bought tickets in advance will be issued with a refund.

Other pre-season games due to kick-off today are at risk of being called off, with the south east worst effected.

Tottenham are due to travel to face League One outfit Reading at 3pm today.

Southeast town Gillingham are set to host freshly relegated League One side Luton Town as well.

Already Corinthian-Causuals’ game against Croydon Athletic has been axed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Met Office have issued an amber weather warning for thunderstorms covering the south east coast.

It also includes the whole of London and stretches as far as Cambridge.

Elsewhere, much of the UK, excluding Wales and the south west of England, are under a yellow thunderstorm warning.

The Met Office says there is a risk of sudden flooding, travel delays and power cuts.

Nottingham Forest’s friendly against Monaco kicks off at 3pm, with the Midlands in the yellow danger alert zone.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United travel to face Rotherham and Celtic are due to host Newcastle.

In Scotland, Glasgow and Edinburgh have also been issued a yellow weather warning for rain.

This will come into effect at 4pm this afternoon, and last until midday on Sunday.
