Power set for sportscar debut in Indianapolis 8 Hour

Two-time IndyCar champion Will Power will make his sportscar racing debut in the Indianapolis 8 Hour on 16-18 October, racing a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for 75 Express.

Power will partner with team owner/driver Kenny Habul and Supercars star Chaz Mostert as part of an all-Australian line-up in the final round of the 2025 Intercontinental GT Challenge.

The announcement makes the 44-year-old the second IndyCar champion in two years to take part in the Indianapolis enduro, after Chip Ganassi Racing star Alex Palou joined the Lone Star Mercedes outfit in 2024.

Power was due to contest his first sportscar race with Habul’s Sun1Energy team at the Daytona 24 Hours in 2023, but was forced to back out of the event to take care of his wife Liz after she suffered complications from a surgery.

While a rookie in sportscars, Power has a strong track record at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, having won at the legendary oval on five occasions in his career – including the Indy 500 in 2018.

The Australian, who will switch to Andretti’s IndyCar squad in 2026 after ending a long relationship with Penske, will also be able to count on the experience of Habul and Mostert.

Habul is a two-time winner of the Bathurst 12 Hour and is aiming to win the IGTC Independent Cup title in Indianapolis, with just six points separating him from joint championship leaders Antares Au and Ralf Bohn.

Mostert is best known as Walkinshaw Andretti United’s lead driver in Supercars, where he has won 25 races, but his sportscar exploits have also seen him take class wins in the Bathurst 12 Hour and Spa 24 Hours.

Another famous driver to tackle the Indianapolis 8H for the first time is MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi, who will race for WRT at the wheel of the #46 BMW M4 GT3 Evo. He will have two familiar team-mates in the form of Kelvin van der Linde and Charles Weerts.

A total of 25 cars will line up for the sixth edition of the Indianapolis 8 Hour, with 11 of those fighting for overall honours in the Pro class.
