Caleb Plant posted his reaction to Edgar Berlanga on social media, dismissing a fight against him in favor of a potential clash against Jaime Munguia later this year.
The former IBF super middleweight champion Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) pointed out on X that his PPV numbers are better than any Berlanga, Jermall Charlo, or Munguia has brought in. That’s actually true.
– Canelo Alvarez vs. Plant: 800,000 PPV buys
– Berlanga vs. Canelo: 650,000 buys
Berlanga’s Plan
It doesn’t matter what Plant says because Berlanga does NOT want to fight him. The New Yorker, Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs), is more of a businessman type of fighter rather than one that focuses on winning world titles.
“Berlanga, Charlo, and Munguia could all fight each other in any order, and NONE of those fights would be as big as ANY of them fighting ME, and that’s💯. I’ve brought in more views, my PPVS have done bigger #s, I’ve fought more world champs and I’ve delivered more exciting fights 🙋🏻♂️,” said Caleb Plant on X, reacting to Edgar Berlanga saying he wants to fight recently knocked out Jaime Munguia later this year to position him to get a rematch with Canelo Alvarez.
He’s targeting money fights that he thinks he can win, which will lead to him getting the much-coveted rematch with Canelo. That’s the pot of gold that Berlanga is pushing for. Edgar is very strategic with the guys he fights, but he’s not the one guiding his path. Berlanga is NOT going to fight Plant.
Although Edgar has mentioned Plant as one of the three fighters he wants to fight to earn the rematch with Alvarez, that’s not going to happen. Berlanga will fight Munguia if the recently knocked-out fighter wins his rematch against Bruno Surace on May 3rd, then the inactive 35-year-old Jermall Charlo.
If Berlanga wins those two fights, he’ll get on his soapbox and crow about the wins and call out Canelo nonstop, hoping that the Saudis will take an interest in financing the needless rematch. In other words, Berlanga will NOT take any chances in fighting one of the good 168 or 175-pounders, like Caleb Plant, Osleys Iglesias, David Benavidez, or David Morrell.
“Gimme” Strategy
Berlanga will just use his wins over the hype job Munguia and the inactive, shiftless Jermall as the catalyst to get the second fight. It’s so easy to read Berlanga’s playbook. He’s tactical, and it’s pathetic how he takes no risks to earn his big paydays. Munguia and the washed-up Jermall Charlo are not risky fights. Those are gimmes.
His management is doing that, and it worked to get him an enormous $10 million fight against Canelo last September. Berlanga fought strictly second-tier opposition to create a 22-0 record. Canelo, being strategic with the type of fights he’s taking in this late stage of his career, saw an easy mark and picked out Berlanga, ignoring his fluff resume. This was all about show.
Berlanga said yesterday that he wants Munguia for the PPV potential, with them being able to market it as a Mexicao vs. Puerto Rico angle. Brunco Surace will likely ruin Berlanga’s vision by knocking out Munguia on May 3rd, forcing Edgar to take a different approach to a fight against Jermall.
