Plans to turn part of Essex golf course into 200 new homes

An Essex golf club has unveiled ambitious redevelopment plans that could see its existing driving range replaced by around 200 new homes to help fund major on-site improvements.

The Rayleigh Club, located in Hullbridge, is proposing to release part of its land for residential development as part of a wider investment strategy aimed at modernising its facilities and strengthening its long-term future.

The 36 hole club says the housing development would generate the funding needed to deliver a new state-of-the-art driving range, alongside a revamped junior and coaching academy.

BIGGER PICTURE

Wider proposals include upgrading and extending the clubhouse, a redesign of the east course, and improved irrigation across the south course.

The replacement driving range would feature 20 fully refurbished practice bays and modern ball-tracking technology, while plans also include the addition of a new on-site golf shop.

The 200 homes would be built on the land currently occupied by the existing driving range. Planning documents indicate that half of the properties would be designated as affordable housing, available through rent and shared ownership schemes.

Club officials say the residential element is central to unlocking the investment required to enhance facilities for members, visitors and future players.

A public exhibition and drop-in session will be held at the club on January 29 between 3pm and 8pm, with a wider public consultation open until February 15.
