Devin Haney’s father, Bill Haney, was in a rage today, angry at Todd Grisham, the Los Angeles press conference monitor, for failing to portray Dev in a favorable light for his fight against Jose Ramirez on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City.
Grisham’s Question
Todd Grisham asked the former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) if he would target Haney’s chin after the way he was dropped several times by Ryan Garcia in his previous fight on April 20th.
The question from Grisham was logical to ask to get some entertaining discussion from Ramirez, who was overly polite throughout. Bill thought that line of questioning by Grisham was not designed to make Devin look good.
He wanted Grisham to mention that Haney was the youngest undisputed champion at lightweight, and that he’s ranked #9 on Ring Magazine’s updated pound-for-pound list. In other words, Bill wanted Grisham to slather the compliments on Haney to make him seem heroic and a young superstar.
That’s not Grisham’s style. He’s the type who likes to poke the bear to stir stuff up, and he had Ramirez wasn’t saying anything interesting. So, he was trying to pry some trash talk out of him.
“You see in the promotion that they always want to separate the black father and the fighter,” said Bill Haney to Fight Hub TV, ranting about being separated from his son, Devin Haney, during today’s press conference in Los Angeles.
“What you saw was a bull s*** press conference that [monitor] Todd Grisham was one-sided, and he didn’t describe Devin the way he was supposed to describe [portray] him as the youngest undisputed champion and the legacy. #9 on the pound-for-pound list and he has a granite chin.
“Have you seen anyone get up from a Ryan Garcia left hook after three times off the canvas? That piece of s***, Todd Grisham, had to ask about his chin. He had to question his chin. He was everything wrong at the press conference. What they’re trying to do is not to get the voice that is really going to tell the real in his corner [i.e., Bill Haney being on stage with Devin].
“They want to separate it and try and destroy the brand and it’s not going to work. On May 2nd, Devin is going to put belt to a** to Jose Ramirez, and I guarantee you that,” said Bill.
