This is another punch to the gut for the Philadelphia 76ers. And this one hurts more than most.

Rookie of the Year frontrunner Jared McCain complained of left knee soreness following last night’s Philly loss to Indiana, and an MRI on Saturday revealed a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee, the team announced. He will have to undergo surgery and is out indefinitely.

How long recovery takes will depend on the details of the injury. What kind of surgery is done (repair or removal) depends on the severity of the tear and where it is on the meniscus.

McCain has been coming off the bench for Philly — when everyone is healthy — and that role will likely be filled now by Lowry, with Eric Gordon possibly getting a chance to get back in the rotation.

This news comes from the same game where Joel Embiid was inadvertently hit in the face by the Pacers’ Bennedict Mathurin, suffering a sinus fracture that will have him missing some time.

Mostly, this is just bad news for McCain, and the NBA has just become a little less fun.
