The transformation of PGA Aroeira Lisboa into one of Portugal’s premier golf destinations has moved a step closer with the relaunch of its popular course, PGA Aroeira No.2, following a major renovation.

A year after the 36-hole resort – the only PGA National in Portugal – completed a comprehensive overhaul of PGA Aroeira No.1, its younger sibling has undergone a similar makeover, with Donald Steel’s classic design reopening last month.

PGA Aroeira No.2 has reopened following a major four-month refurbishment programme and is the latest upgrade to be unveiled by the resort, with further investment set to include a new clubhouse and the completion of the Aroeira Collections by Missoni real-estate development that is set to reposition PGA Aroeira as the best golf destination south of Lisbon.

Nuno Sepulveda, co-CEO at Details – Sports, Hospitality, Leisure – PGA Aroeira Lisboa’s management company, said: “PGA Aroeira Lisboa is a venue with so much potential. It has all the ingredients needed to be the go-to golf venue in Lisbon, and reopening Aroeira No.2 is the next step in reestablishing the resort at the forefront of Portuguese golf.”

Formerly known as Aroeira Challenge, PGA Aroeira No.2 – which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year – closed its doors in June to undergo a significant maintenance programme to enhance the golf-course experience being offered to members and guests.

As well as the comprehensive overhaul of all tee boxes and bunkers, other upgrades made by the resort’s greenkeeping team to improve the course conditioning included the renovation of fairways and greens as well as general landscaping and the course’s five characteristic lakes.

In addition, and underlining PGA Aroeira’s long-term commitment to sustainability, state-of-the-art irrigation systems and drought-resistant Bermuda grass have been installed to drastically reduce water consumption while the layout’s cart paths and bridges have also been enhanced. In keeping with Steel’s original vision, though, the physical specifications of PGA Aroeira No.2 – renowned as a stern test for players of all skill levels – and its routing have been left unchanged.

Sepulveda added: “Aroeira No.2 maybe very different in style to Aroeira No.1, but it is every bit as good as its older brother. It is an amazing design and the changes that we’ve made will only serve to improve the experience offered on one of most underrated courses not just in Lisbon, but in the whole of Portugal.”

Details – Sports, Hospitality, Leisure – took over the management of PGA Aroeira Lisboa, one of Portuguese golf’s most iconic venues, two years ago and the resort is one of 12 golf venues in the portfolio of Portugal’s largest golf course operator.

In addition to significantly improving the golf facilities, further investment will include the opening of Aroeira Collections by Missoni, an exclusive residential and tourist project in partnership with the world-renowned Italian fashion house.

At the heart of the ambitious development will be the Aroeira Collections Hotel which, set to open in 2027 and offering 138 one and two-bedroom apartments, will sit in the centre of the resort’s two championship courses and be a major boost for Portuguese tourism and the local economy.
