Up-and-coming tin-top racer Dexter Patterson has secured his return to the British Touring Car Championship at the wheel of an Un-Limited Motorsport Cupra Leon.
The 21-year-old Scot will be the oldest half of the expanded two-car Un-Limited line-up, in which he partners teenaged 2024 Mini Challenge runner-up Max Hall.
Patterson, an ex-karting star and promising single-seater racer, took his BTCC bow in 2022 at the wheel of a Laser Tools Racing Infiniti, and impressed many by qualifying the unwieldy car – which had suffered huge handling problems in the wake of the installation of hybrid for that season – in seventh place for the Brands Hatch Grand Prix finale.
He then switched over to Team Hard for 2023, when he raced the ex-Goff/Thompson Cupra with little success outside a sixth-place finish at Knockhill.
After turning his attention to GT4 competition in a Lotus in 2024, Patterson tested with Un-Limited late last year at Donington Park. The team reported that he set highly competitive times despite using old tyres and brakes.
Patterson will undertake his third BTCC campaign at the wheel of the 2023-build Cupra raced by Bobby Thompson and Michael Crees at Hard that season, and by Chris Smiley at Restart Racing in 2024.
“I’m excited to be back on the BTCC grid after spending a year racing GT4 in Europe,” said Patterson.
“Having already competed in two BTCC seasons, I have a strong understanding of the championship and the driving style required to succeed.
“My main goal for 2025 is to extract the maximum performance from every event on the calendar, with a particular focus on the Jack Sears Trophy. Of course, a few podiums along the way would be fantastic, too.”
Un-Limited boss Bob Sharpless added: “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Dexter to Un-Limited Motorsport for the 2025 season.
“We had the chance to do some testing with him at the end of 2024, and his pace in the Cupra was undeniable. Having raced with the car before, he was immediately comfortable and confident, which is a huge asset for the team.
“With Dexter and Max as team-mates, we’re in a strong position to make a serious push for the Jack Sears and Independent championships.
“Dexter’s a former World Karting Champion, and he’s got unfinished business with the Jack Sears Trophy—he’s hungry to prove himself.”
