The New England Patriots haven’t been able to win often since Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Since Brady’s departure, the Patriots have gone just 26-42, or a win-rate of 38.2%.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs have developed a winning recipe like no other, making five Super Bowl appearances in the past six seasons.
Now, the Patriots have a chance to get a taste of the Chiefs’ winning ways by poaching one of their players.
Although he was only in Kansas City for 13 games counting their Super Bowl run, DeAndre Hopkins got first-hand experience in playing for Andy Reid while catching passes from Patrick Mahomes, two surefire future Hall of Famers.
Now, Hopkins is set for free agency, and FanSided’s Wynston Wilcox suggests that the Patriots should sign the five-time Pro Bowl receiver.
“They could see some value in bringing in a veteran like Hopkins,” Wilcox wrote. “Hopkins isn’t necessarily going to be the 1,000-yard receiver he once was. That said, if the Patriots sign him and maybe get a rookie in the NFL draft, it could pay off. This is all as a contingency plan for possibly missing out on Higgins. An aging veteran is better than a chance on a rookie. The Patriots have been taking chances on rookies the last few seasons and it hasn’t worked out. Now’s their chance to make a big move, even if it’s not the first option.”
Hopkins is coming off a season where he recorded 610 yards and five touchdowns. Yet, after averaging just 28.8 yards per game (YPG) in six games with the Titans, Hopkins’ production increased greatly with the trade to Kansas City, averaging 43.7 YPG in 10 regular season games. The soon-to-be 33-year-old Hopkins would certainly add some much-needed veteran leadership to a young Patriots receiver room lacking top-end playmakers, but he may prioritize a chance to join an immediate Super Bowl contender.
