Drake Maye had a promising rookie season.
Apparently, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith wasn’t watching.
Smith recently weighed in on the New England Patriots’ quarterback after the Pats signed Stefon Diggs in free agency, and he wasn’t kind.
“I’m just wondering about Stefon Diggs. You go from Josh Allen to C.J. Stroud to Drake Maye, you sure about that? Are you sure?” Smith asked on First Take. “I think that is a legitimate question to ask because no matter what you are as a receiver, it don’t mean a d— thing if the quarterback can’t get you the football.”
Smith tried to cover his tracks, but only slightly.
“I’m just saying, there’s a difference between him and C.J. Stroud and Josh Allen,” Smith said. “And for Stefon Diggs to go from those situations to this, I’m really, really wondering about that.”

It’s fair to wonder for about two seconds whether Diggs should’ve joined a more veteran quarterback.
But Smith is also off-base in his criticism of Maye.
Maye had a better rookie season than Allen as a passer in every relevant category. He also had a better completion percentage already in 2024 than Stroud did in his second season elsewhere in the AFC.
Diggs may have not had a huge list of suitors, either, coming off his ACL injury.
All told, Maye didn’t deserve to catch this stray. And it might just have been plain wrong.
