The New England Patriots have fired head coach Jerod Mayo after one season and are in the middle of their interview cycle to find their next guy.
Quickly after that, New England will have to turn their attention to free agency and the NFL draft, where they have money to spend and the No. 4 overall pick at their disposal.
With so many needs, the Patriots could focus on nearly any position in April and upgrade their roster for the foreseeable future. In a recent mock draft for Newsweek, NFL writer Gavino Borquez projected that the Patriots will select Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter in the first round after Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders go in the first three picks.
“It’s a new era in New England as they will look for a new head coach after firing Jerod Mayo,” Borquez wrote. “Regardless of who oversees the team, they need a blue-chip player who can contribute from Day 1. Carter is an athletic freak who lives in opposing backfields with his combination of physicality, burst and array of pass rush moves.”
Some will argue that offensive tackle and wide receiver are more pressing needs for New England in 2025, but adding a pass-rusher who had a Big-Ten-leading 11 sacks in 2024 could certainly benefit a unit that failed to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks this past season.
