The New England Patriots have spent big in free agency, but have not added an elite weapon for Drake Maye. They could add multiple early in the NFL Draft, however.
The Patriots hold the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft. Travis Hunter is a name that has often been linked to the Patriots. The two-way star has the opportunity to play a big role for the Patriots offense while also contributing on defense. FanSided’s Rucker Haringey predicted that the Patriots would not only draft Hunter, but also add running back Cam Skattebo and wide receiver Jalen Royals early in the draft.
“Vrabel doesn’t view football in all the same ways that Bill Belichick does, but both coaches should really appreciate a tough, versatile running back like Cam Skattebo,” wrote Haringey. “He may lack the explosive traits than some of his peers in this year’s draft class do, but he’s a gamer in the best sense of the word.”
Skattebo carried Arizona State throughout the season and even delivered a phenomenal performance in their playoff game. He can be an asset for the Patriots’ rushing attack while also serving as a threat in the passing game.
“New England needs to add competent wide receivers to help unlock things for Maye,” wrote Haringey. “Royals lacks the explosive traits required to be a star, but his outstanding feel for the game allows him to comfortably profile as a No. 2 wideout before his rookie contract expires. The former Utah State standout is more smooth than fast but he has enough pace to punish opposing cornerbacks who don’t respect his speed.”
After failing to add playmakers on offense in free agency, it would not be surprising to see the Patriots emphasize offense early in the draft. Adding Hunter, Skattebo and Royals in the first four selections would add three players with the potential to contribute right away.
