Late in the New England Patriots’ 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Saturday at Gillette Stadium, Patriots fans booed their team and asked their ownership to fire Jerod Mayo through a chorus of chants.
Since then, a number of Patriots have responded to criticism from the fans, including Davon Godchaux and Deatrich Wise Jr., who both stood up for their coach.
On Friday, Patriots linebacker Jahlani Tavai joined “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI and was asked about the boos and chants, and he took that opportunity to attack the fan base once again.
“I was frustrated. I definitely think I told them to quiet down in a non-polite way,” Tavai said. “There’s a reason why they’re fans. Everybody can say what they think that we should be doing, but they’re not qualified to do what Mayo is doing or whatever the Krafts are doing. I appreciate (the fans) at times, but sometimes they just have to know their place and just understand that it’s a work in progress. Rome wasn’t built in one day.”
Tavai went on to compare New England to the Detroit Lions when Dan Campbell took over the franchise, which has been the major talking point for every pro-Mayo fan, player or media member.
There’s a long way to go before the Patriots should be compared to a team that could finish with 15 wins this season.
