Patrick Dorgu defends under-pressure Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim… and admits £250m summer splurge can only help

PATRICK DORGU has defended Ruben Amorim’s tactics and believes the manager’s methods are starting to get across to the Manchester United players.

The Portuguese boss has again come under fire after his Red Devils took just one point from the first six available this season.

His 3-4-3 formation has been criticised by some  – while club legend Wayne Rooney says they are not playing the system particularly well.

Yet Dorgu, 20, says the players have a better grasp of what is expected of them after going through a full pre-season with the former Sporting Lisbon boss.

The Danish wing-back said: “Yeah, we definitely understand more. We understand what he wants us to do, and obviously, now that we’re not in Europe, we have more training.

“So for him he has more time for us to really understand his ideas and stuff. Obviously, we want to go back to playing many games. Now we have the time to do it and then we need to perform this season.”

Dorgu believes the three at the back formation favoured by Amorim is more flexible than many people think.

He added: “It depends what system you’re playing against. You can always drop alongside the centre back to make it a 4-3-3.

“It’s just about adapting to who you’re playing against and just help each other, move for each other.

“Then it’s not really about the system – more like how you’re dealing with it. it’s up to you how you want to play.

“If the midfielders feel like they’re getting man-marked, then they can move down get the ball and then play. You just need to move into your position.”

Amorim has taken just 28 points from his 29 Prem matches in charge since taking over at Old Trafford in November.

Yet Dorgu – who was one of the first players brought to the club by the current boss in February – is a fan of his management style.

He has played as a winger and a full-back during his career so far, so he is a perfect fit for Amorim’s style of play.

He added: “The manager is a really good guy, he’s positive with everyone and always defending you. He always tries to help you play the game, so he knows how it is.”

“He wants me to make a lot of runs and be more attacking. Last season, I could have been more attacking.

“I feel like I’ve improved that in pre-season and now it’s about attacking more, getting into the box and helping the team create more chances.

“In Denmark, I was playing wing-back. Then when I moved to Lecce I was playing left-back, and then the last season before I moved to United, I was playing more as a winger.

“It’s just easier to attack as a wing-back than as a full-back; I feel comfortable in that role. But I could still do the job as I full-back, but it’s just less attacking.

“It was a difficult season last year and I feel like I learned a lot. I was thrown into everything, but I think I dealt with it well. I just try to bring a lot of confidence into this season.”

Dorgu was speaking at a fan engagement event at Carrington where 13 young season ticket holders took part in a skills workshop with coaches from the United Foundation.

The club organised similar opportunities last season with the aim of providing their most loyal supporters with a memorable experience.

United’s training HQ has just re-opened after a £50million facelift while more than £200m has been spent this summer on new signings.

So Dorgu says there is still plenty to be positive about with so much of the season still to play.

The former Lecce man added: “The facilities help and the new signings have helped as well.

“They bring a lot of good energy, quality into the group. We tried to be positive about our new season.

“Everyone has a point to prove this season. We need to get back to Europe, so I feel like if we are as a group and ready to perform on the pitch.

“We need to stick together, be happy, positive, and try to do what the coach asks.”
