The Seattle Seahawks will likely lose DK Metcalf this offseason, as the star receiver requested a trade after six seasons with the team.
Metcalf has been involved in trade rumors over the last few weeks, as the 27-year-old has just one year left on his contract and looked disgruntled at times last year.
The former Ole Miss standout added in his trade demand to Seattle that he wants a new contract from the team he gets moved to and also wants to play for a contender, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
A plethora of clubs will be interested in acquiring Metcalf, but ESPN’s Bill Barnwell believes the Green Bay Packers are a logical landing spot for the two-time Pro Bowler.
Metcalf would give the Packers an immediate replacement for Christian Watson, who has seen his promising career hampered by injuries, most recently a torn ACL suffered in the Week 18 loss to the Bears. Watson, comfortably the biggest wide receiver on Green Bay’s roster at 6-foot-4, might not be ready to start the 2025 season on the active roster. With the 25-year-old entering the final year of his rookie deal, the Packers might also try to trade him as part of a Metcalf deal, which would leave them with Metcalf and Romeo Doubs on the outside and Jayden Reed in the slot.
On the other hand, a Metcalf move would be entirely out of character for Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst. The Packers hold on to their premium picks, and Gutekunst places more of a priority on young talent than any other general manager. Metcalf isn’t old, but Green Bay would be giving up valuable picks and paying out a significant deal for a player as he approaches 30. That doesn’t seem in line with how the organization philosophically approaches its roster, but maybe Gutekunst feels the need to take a big swing.
The Packers have been to the playoffs in each of the first two seasons with Jordan Love as the starting quarterback. Though Green Bay has a few promising pieces in the wide receivers room, the team lacks a dependable No.1 pass-catching option for Love, and it may be time to explore the trade market for a proven player instead of opting to go the draft route.
Though Metcalf had an up-and-down 2024 season, the former second-round pick is one of the most talented playmakers in the NFL and has never posted less than 900 receiving yards in his six-year career thus far. The veteran has also tallied three 1,000-yard campaigns and two seasons with double-digit touchdowns.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Seattle’s asking price for Metcalf is a first and third-round pick. The consistently productive receiver is also seeking an extension worth $30 million per year.
It’s incredibly unlikely that any team will give up two premium draft choices for Metcalf, so the Seahawks’ asking price will go down over time.
If general manager Brian Gutekunst can find a way to acquire Metcalf for a Day 2 pick and sign him to a plausible extension, it would be a fantastic win-now move from the Packers, as Love would finally have a dynamic No. 1. receiver, and the addition would take Matt LaFleur and Adam Stenavich’s offense to the next level.
