Packers HC Matt LaFleur says player tried to fight him after being released

The NFL is a business after all.

With just 53 roster spots on each of the 32 teams in the NFL, each of the 1,696 players that will be active on a roster at the start of the season are always looking over their shoulder in hopes of never making the dreaded walk to their head coach’s office to find out they’ll need to look elsewhere to live out their dreams.

While NFL head coaches are paid a pretty penny, delivering the news that a player will no longer be afforded the opportunity to be a professional football player is something no coach wants to do…especially if you’re Matt LaFleur during one nearly violent confrontation.

During an appearance on the ‘Bussin’ with The Boys’ podcast, LaFleur recalled the time he believed a player was about to fight him after being released from the Packers.

“I had a player a couple of years back. It was just him and I. I mean, we’re in this cinderblock room, and I think he’s going to whip my a** and there’s nobody around,” LaFleur recalled. “I was just like, ‘oh, well, here it goes guys, this is the end’. And you just try to de-escalate the situation, but sometimes there’s no getting through.”

LaFleur was careful to not give any indication or hints about who the undisclosed player was but fans and media alike will likely be playing detective to figure out who had the heated exchange with the Packers head coach.

The Packers begin their 2025 campaign on Sunday, September 7 in Lambeau Field against their NFC North rivals, the Detroit Lions.
