The Green Bay Packers had been deliberating a major decision throughout the offseason. Both the team and cornerback Jaire Alexander were working to agree on a contract that satisfied both sides. Alexander was seeking a significant payday, but the Packers were hesitant to commit a large sum due to his history of injuries.
“On the contract front, the Packers could want a revised deal that allows Alexander — who has missed at least 10 games in three of the last four seasons — to earn his full salary if he’s healthy and available in 2025 but protects the team in case the injuries continue,” Packers Wire’s Zach Kruse wrote.
Amid the contract negotiations, Alexander was reportedly involved in trade discussions. It was believed he could be dealt if a new agreement wasn’t reached. During this period, he skipped voluntary workouts but maintained regular communication with the team.
“Alexander has not reported to the Packers’ voluntary workouts, which would raise red flags over his status with the team. While speculation has run wild, passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley sang a different tune, telling ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that he’s been in contact with Alexander every day while skipping the offseason workouts,” reported Dairyland Express’ Chris Schad.
On Monday morning, the Packers made the surprising decision to release Alexander after failing to reach an agreement. With Alexander now a free agent, the team faces a major gap at cornerback. In response, wide receiver Bo Melton was moved to cornerback.
Packers staff writer Jacob Morley believes this move could pave the way for a significant trade at the wide receiver position.

“Moving Melton to CB should open the door for GB to acquire Terry McLaurin,” Morley said.
McLaurin is currently in the midst of his own contract dispute and could be a trade candidate. If the Packers were to acquire him, it might force them to part ways with Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds, but McLaurin would be a valuable target for quarterback Jordan Love.
