Oscar De La Hoya wants Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney rematch next

During an interview with DAZN on Saturday night, the Golden Boy promoter dismissed the idea of giving Ryan Garcia a transition bout after his recent title win. Instead, De La Hoya pointed directly at a second fight with Devin Haney.

Ryan is coming off a dominant, unanimous decision victory over Mario Barrios three weeks ago in Las Vegas to capture the WBC welterweight title. While Garcia has mentioned several possible opponents since that win, De La Hoya believes the clear choice is to revisit Garcia’s rivalry with Haney.

“I actually like the rematch with Devin Haney. There’s a lot of talk, a lot of chatter right now,” De La Hoya said. “Devin Haney does deserve the rematch just because he’s been talking a lot, and his past performance was a really good performance.”

The promoter pointed to Ryan’s performance against Barrios as proof that the former lightweight star has entered a new stage of his career. Garcia scored a knockdown early in that fight and controlled most of the action over twelve rounds.

“What Ryan did in his last fight against Mario Barrios, a world champion, he’s back better than ever, mentally and physically,” De La Hoya said. “I’d love to see that rematch, Haney vs. Ryan Garcia. Ryan Garcia against Devin Haney makes all the sense in the world.”

The idea would require a number of moving pieces to line up. Haney is currently involved in negotiations for a May 30 welterweight bout with WBA champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero, a fight that could complicate the timing of any Garcia rematch.

Even with that possibility, De La Hoya made it clear he does not want Ryan to take an easier interim fight while waiting for the division to sort itself out.

“Do not take a tune-up,” De La Hoya said. “Let’s make this fight happen.”

If Golden Boy follows that plan, Garcia’s next appearance could bring him back across the ring from Haney in one of the most anticipated rematches available at welterweight.
