Ortiz Upset at Plan: Shakur Wins WBO, Vacates, Keyshawn Fights Albright

Ortiz Upset at Plan: Shakur Wins WBO, Vacates, Keyshawn Fights Albright

Jamaine Ortiz is annoyed about Shakur Stevenson’s plans of capturing the WBO 140-lb belt from Teofimo Lopez and vacating it immediately for his “homie” Keyshawn Davis to fight for the title.

The Blueprint: Shakur → Vacate → Keyshawn

Ortiz says Keyshawn (13-0, 9 KOs) plans on fighting Nahir Albright in a rematch for the vacant WBO light welterweight title. The former WBO lightweight champion Davis has already mentioned wanting to face Albright next. He would come up from 135 with him to fight for the vacated title.

Not surprisingly, #11 WBO contender Jamaine (20-2-1, 10 KOs) feels it’s unfair that Shakur would give up the WBO title to his ‘brother’, Keyshawn, so that he can fight for the vacant 140-belt against lightweight Albright.

“Shakur is helping his homie be in position by taking the belt from Teofimo, and then he’s going to vacate it. So, then his homie can fight for the vacated title,” said Jamaine Ortiz to MillCity Boxing about Shakur Stevenson’s plans if he dethrones Teofimo Lopez of his WBO light welterweight title.

Albright Not Ranked at 140

If the WBO wanted to step in to prevent #1-ranked Keyshawn from fighting Albright for the vacant 140-lb title, they could do that. Albright isn’t ranked in the top 15 at light welterweight. if the WBO is fine with Keyshawn using Albright, there’s nothing Jamaine can do about it.

Why Albright? Why Not Jamaine?

“Then he’s [Keyshawn] going to win a vacant [WBO 140-lb] title against [Nahir] Albright. Okay. That’s going to make you the best at 140? No, it’s not. Fight me, and then you’re going to have a good challenge there.

“I beat him a long time ago,” said Jamaine when asked when he beat Albright, which was February 18, 2022, winning a 10-round unanimous decision,” said Jamaine. “I outboxed him. If he [Keyshawn] wants to fight, fight someone that is really established at 140, because I fought Albright at 135.

Keyshawn’s “Fast Track” to a Belt

“[He’s [Davis] going up to 140. So, he wants somebody else [Albright] to move up with him. Like, what?” said Ortiz about Keyshawn wanting to bring Nahir Albright up from 135 so he can fight him for the vacant WBO light welterweight title.

That’s one way for Keyshawn to ensure that he captures a title at 140. Pick someone he already beat at lightweight, bring him up to 140, and beat him again. It’s off-putting when you think about it, but if the WBO is on board with it, you can’t say much.
