One-cap former England star joins Macclesfield as Wayne Rooney’s brother’s No2 after Robbie Savage quit for Forest Green

FORMER Arsenal and Everton striker Francis Jeffers is the new assistant manager of Macclesfield.

Jeffers will be the sounding board for John Rooney – brother of Wayne Rooney – who was appointed first team boss at the start of the month.

The managerial reshuffle came after former head coach Robbie Savage left to join Forest Green Rovers.

Savage, also a long-term board member of Macc, made the switch after just one year at the helm.

During his season in charge, the Silkmen won the Northern Premier League Premier Division and secured promotion to the National League North.

The former Premier League star committed to Macclesfield just a month before his exit by signing a two-year contract.

However, Savage has now been replaced by Rooney and Jeffers.

Following his arrival at the club, Jeffers said: “It’s a massive opportunity. The gaffer is someone I’ve known for a long time.

“I’ve coached him, so I know what he’s about. So, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Jeffers kicked off his professional playing career with Everton in 1997 and joined Arsenal for £10million four years later.

He also played for the likes of Charlton, Rangers, Blackburn, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle Jets, Floriana and Accrington Stanley.

The former striker’s only appearance for England came in February 2003 against Australia.

He scored a consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat – joining an exclusive club of players to have one cap, one goal for the Three Lions.
