There is likely nobody in the National Hockey League who has worse luck right now than longtime forward Corey Perry.
Perry, who has played the last 18 months with the Edmonton Oilers, just lost in the Stanley Cup Final for the fifth time in the past six seasons. Making matters even more eyebrow raising is that the Oilers are the fourth team he’s made an unsuccessful trip to the Stanley Cup Final with.
In doing so, he became the first player in NHL history to accomplish the unfortunate feat.
Despite the bitterly disappointing results, he sounds like he’s ready to give it another go.
“Yeah, it’s devastating. I mean, five of the last six, it doesn’t get any easier,” Perry said of the his fifth Cup Final loss. “It just doesn’t feel real.
“But you get ready and you move on and you get ready for next season. Hopefully, you have that opportunity to do it again.”
The 40 year-old veteran is a pending unrestricted free-agent, with his one-year, $1.4-million contract set to expire on July 1. But in his words, he would prefer to remain with the Oilers and try to reach the mountaintop again.
“I just want to win,” said Perry. “Hopefully it’s here and hopefully we can figure something out and get something done, because this is a good team and there are some good things ahead.”
In his first full season with the Oilers, Perry scored 19 goals with 11 assists. He then followed that up with a robust 10 goals in the postseason.
He’s not quite ready to throw in the towel on his career, but promised to look back at some point in the future at his overall body of work.
“Maybe in 10 years when I look back,” he said. “Whenever I’m done playing.”
