Norris’ British GP celebrations cut short after being hit in fence accident

Lando Norris missed the traditional post-race celebrations with fans on the home straight at the British Grand Prix after a photographer accidentally fell on him from the debris fencing lining the pitstraight.

The McLaren driver was attempting to climb up the fencing to celebrate with a packed crowd of excited fans following his first home Grand Prix victory. However, as photographers climbed up ahead of him, the fencing collapsed, causing one to fall into the driver.

While the photographer immediately turned to apologise to Norris, the 25-year-old was escorted back to safety by his team while he held his face.

McLaren has since confirmed to Autosport that he sustained a small cut to his face.

Norris beamed as he reflected on the win while speaking to 2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button directly after the race.

“It’s beautiful. Everything I dreamed of. Everything I’ve ever wanted to achieve. Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it,” he said.

“This is where it all started for me, and now thankfully I’ve been able to have my go.

“Incredible race, stressful as always, but the support from the fans made the difference today, so I’ve got to thank them for it all.

“Your mind just goes pretty blank. Everything you might think before the race, you forget. The main thing is just don’t f*** it up, that’s rule number one.

“The last few laps I was just looking into the crowd. I was just trying to take it all in, enjoy the moment, because it might never happen again. I hope it does. But these are memories that I’ll bring with me forever. An incredible achievement.”

He added: “In terms of being a stressful race, this is as stressful as you can get. It was a good race for Oscar as well. I’ve got to give credit to Oscar, he was fast the whole way.

“So a round of applause Oscar, because he put up a good fight. I enjoy those moments together when we’re on track, not as much when he’s ahead of me as when he’s behind, but that’s life.”

The McLaren driver remains second in the drivers’ championship following his win at Silverstone, but has closed the gap to eight points to team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri.
