Non-league club shattering record for longest away journey with 914 mile round-trip

TRURO CITY will set a new record for the longest away journey on Saturday for their away fixture to Gateshead.

It is a longer round trip than London to Paris and back.

They will make a 914 mile round trip to face Gateshead on Saturday

The Cornish club won the National League South last season, reaching fifth-tier glory for the first time in their history.

Their promotion means longer journeys and their upcoming fixture means a 10-12 hour journey on a bus today as they travel to Gateshead.

Connor Riley-Lowe told BBC Radio Cornwall: “When I signed for Truro I never thought in all honesty I’d be going to Gateshead away.

“It’s exciting really. I’ve been at Truro for 10 years now and we’re very, very used to travelling.

“I know you read the stats, but for us it’s just more time on the bus – this time it’s just a little bit extra longer.”

Their position in the south-west means even their closest away game – at Yeovil Town – is three hours away.

Truro already held the record for longest away trip, after their 878-mile round trip to face Carlisle United in September.

But it has now been surpassed by their journey to the North East.

Manager John Askey said: “We should be getting used to it now, but this one is exceptional isn’t it?

“Clubs that come down to us, most of them are flying down and staying over on the Friday.

“So for us to have to do it on the coach is obviously not ideal, but because we have so many long journeys, that’s the way we have to do it.

“We just have to get on with it, but obviously with it being such a long journey, the longest it’s ever been in English football, it draws attention to it.”

Eric Perez, Truro’s Canadian chairman, will suffer through the bus journey with players, despite the round-trip taking twice as long as his seven-hour flight from Toronto to London.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to breaking the record with them – a record that will never be broken, I don’t think.

“Well, it’ll be broken when we play in Newcastle in the league – that’s when it’ll be broken and that’ll be some years when we’ve achieved some promotions.

“I’m not going to say it’s a short journey. It’s a ridiculously long journey in context.”

But the side are struggling in the National League currently sitting at 22nd putting them in relegation danger as Gateshead enjoy middle-of-the-table stability.
