The San Francisco 49ers are working on extending Brock Purdy. However, there are concerns about his ability to win with a depleted roster, raising questions about his worth.
Purdy’s extension could pay him nearly $60 million a season. However, Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn urged the 49ers to only offer him a three-year, $97.5 million deal.
“The main reason to extend Purdy is to appease him,” wrote Cohn. “But if he wants nearly $60 million per season, that’s so much more than the 49ers have to pay him. Instead, they could offer him a three-year deal worth $97.5 million. This would be a good deal for him because he’d get a signing bonus which means he’d get a large sum of cash upfront.”
Last season, Purdy struggled when everything around was not perfect. This offseason, the 49ers lost many key players, and the roster will be as thin as it has been in Purdy’s time as the quarterback. Cohn thinks it would be unwise to pay Purdy until he can prove he can carry a shorthanded 49ers team. He suggested that if he does not accept a $97.5 million deal for three seasons, the team should just franchise tag him twice, bringing the amount the team needs to pay him out to just over $97 million.
“And if Purdy demands a trade, they could move him and bring in Kirk Cousins who’s under contract for three more seasons, and his base salaries add up to $97.5 million,” wrote Cohn. “Which means there is absolutely no good business reason for the 49ers to offer Purdy or any quarterback more than three years, $98 million this offseason.”

Ultimately, Cohn does not think that Purdy is worth more than around $30 million annually when a player like Cousins could give the 49ers the same chance to win.
