Compared to how most other teams around the NFL have done against the Detroit Lions this year, the Seattle Seahawks’ 13-point loss a month ago doesn’t seem so bad in retrospect. The Lions still haven’t lost since, and along the way they have crushed the Dallas Cowboys by 38 points, beaten a very-tough Minnesota Vikings team by two, and then obliterated the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, once again by a margin of 38 points.
It’s a shame that Detroit’s superstar defensive end Aidan Hutchinson won’t be able to finish out the season with the Lions and see how far they can go. Hutchinson has since suffered a broken leg and was placed on injured reserve two weeks ago. That should make Detroit a buyer at the upcoming NFL trade deadline for help on the edge. Might the Seahawks be in the mood to help?
According to one trade propoal, they could. Logan Ulrich at NFL Trade Rumors came up with nine potential trades today, and one of them has Seattle sending outside linebacker Trevis Gipson to Detroit.
Seahawks OLB Trevis Gipson to Lions
“Gipson was traded to the Seahawks coming out of the preseason but has fallen out of the rotation at edge rusher even with Seattle dealing with injuries. It would not be surprising to see him on the move again, either before the deadline or after via waivers. The Lions’ need at edge rusher is well-documented and HC Dan Campbell admitted after Week 7 they probably needed to make a move. If they strike out on some of the bigger-name options, Gipson is an interesting fit.”
In exchange Ulrich suggests that the Seahawks get a conditional seventh-round draft pick back from the Lions.
If this deal were to go down you wouldn’t hear us complaining. To be honest it would be nice to get anything in return for Gipson, who has not performed well for the Seahawks since coming over in a pre-regular season trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That trade wouldn’t have been necessary if general manager John Schneider hadn’t just sent Darrell Taylor to the Chicago Bears, but that’s a story for another day.
Point is, Gipson has no future in this edge rotation even with Uchenna Nwosu out and Dre’Mont Jones mostly just taking up space. If any other team is going to win the Super Bowl, we’d prefer it to be Detroit. This move probably wouldn’t move the needle much to get them there, but they’re free to try for a seventh.
