Over the last several seasons, Jaire Alexander has been a gem in the secondary for the Green Bay Packers. The cornerback was named to the Pro Bowl in the 2020 and 2022 seasons, but he has played in just seven games apiece over the last two seasons due to injury.
Because of the injuries he has had lately, it is believed the Packers will move on from him, either by trading him or releasing him this offseason.
If that happens, the Packers will need a legitimate starting cornerback in order to continue what it hopes will be a journey back to the top of the football world. A Pro Football Network mock draft from Saturday has them using the No. 23 pick on Shavon Revel Jr., a cornerback from East Carolina.
“Shavon Revel Jr. is going to be one of the most undervalued prospects in this class because of an injury suffered early on in the 2024 season,” wrote Joe DeLeone. “His length and range are that of a future perennial Pro-Bowler.”
Revel tore his ACL in late October, so it isn’t a given he will be ready for NFL training camp this summer. However, that injury could make teams reluctant to take him relatively early in the draft, and that could present an opportunity for Green Bay if it believes highly enough in him.
In 2023, his last relatively healthy season, he recorded 13 passes defended, four tackles for loss, one interception and 54 total tackles (29 solo) in 12 games. A Bleacher Report scouting report called him a “good overall athlete” who has an “aggressive style of play” and a “blend of size, speed, and physicality.”
He stands 6-foot-3 and weighs just over 190 pounds, giving him the type of frame NFL scouts want in a defensive back. While he likely won’t be an interception magnet at the next level, he is also effective in helping to stop the run.
