Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes talks terrifying Brazil plane ordeal while sending fierce Carabao Cup warning to Tottenham

BRUNO GUIMARAES slept through his recent plane scare – but insists Tottenham will not catch Newcastle napping.

The Brazilian downed Fulham with a 90th-minute winner and instantly set his sights on Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash at home to Spurs.

Guimaraes, 27, became the first Toon skipper in 70 years to lift major silverware after they beat Liverpool at Wembley in March.

Now he is desperate to do that again as he revealed the desire within the whole Newcastle squad to retain the trophy.

He said: “It means a lot. We want to keep making history.

“We went 70 years without a win, but we can make it two in two. It’s a big possibility, a big opportunity, so we don’t want to miss it.

West Ham ready to back Nuno in January to avoid following Forest’s footsteps

“It’s going to be a big game for us and we hope we’re gonna be ready for taking advantage in the game.

“It’s a big moment, and even more because we won last season. We want to do it again, keep making history, against a great and very focused team.”

Guimaraes and fellow Newcastle Samba star Joelinton suffered a scare earlier this month at the start of their epic 12,000-mile slog to represent Brazil.

The duo’s flight from Amsterdam to South Korea was forced to turn around mid-flight due to a broken window before they were forced to travel on separate flights in a mad dash to Seoul.

However, as terrifying as that sounds, Guimaraes revealed he SLEPT through all of the drama.

Discussing it publicly for the first time, he said: “Two windows broke in the middle of the flight. We were in the middle of the air and could not stop, so we had to fly back. So we lost a few hours to it. Amsterdam to Amsterdam… I’ve never seen this before.

“I was sleeping. I just woke up and said, ‘Two hours to come back to Amsterdam?’ I didn’t understand anything. But after they explained to me that it was moving a lot during the flight.

“I was not scared. After, when I knew, I was a little bit. But during the flight, I was okay.

Joelinton was awake and when I woke up, he said: ‘We are going back’. I couldn’t believe it. I said, ‘Are you serious?’”

Meanwhile, Fulham face a huge week. They travel to League One Wycombe in the last-16 of the cup on Tuesday on the back of four straight defeats before hosting fellow strugglers Wolves.

But despite the late heartbreak in the North East, it was a landmark day for their midfielder Alex Iwobi.

The 29-year-old ex-Arsenal and Everton ace made his 300th Premier League appearance on Saturday, making him the first Nigerian to reach that milestone.

He said: “It’s amazing. It’s a big achievement to lead that, with the likes of Shola Ameobi and even my uncle [Jay-Jay Okocha] that’s participated in the Premier League.

“It’s an honour, but I’m not done yet, I’m going to keep on going and hopefully keep the record going.”
