NEWCASTLE are on the brink of signing AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.
The two clubs are hashing out the finer details for a transfer in the region of £35m.
Thiaw, 24, has reportedly agreed personal terms and is set to complete a medical.
The Toon are in desperate need of a new central defender with Sven Botman having a string of injury since arriving in the Prem.
Every other first-team centre-back Newcastle have available to them is aged 31 or over – Dan Burn, 33, Fabian Schar, 33, and Jamaal Lascelles 31.
Thiaw rose through the ranks at Schalke, making 64 appearances for the first-team before being snapped up by AC Milan in 2022.
This news will come as a much needed boost to Newcastle fans who are down in the dumps about their woeful summer business.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell leaving at the start of the transfer window and it has left a gaping hole at the club.
Supporters have taken to social media to have their say on the potential signing of Thiaw.
Goosenufc joked on X: “Steady. This almost looks like competence!” in a nod to the club’s disappointing transfer window.
Peter Malcolm added: “Great to see some movement at last. Thiaw’s a solid addition, young, experienced, and fits the profile we need at the back. Hope this one gets over the line quickly.”
Another fan seemed upbeat, saying: “Yessss, things are moving in the right direction.”
Other supporters remained dubious, with Wolzy saying: “I’ll believe it when I see it!” and another adding “Won’t be overly confident until his signature is on the dotted line.”
