New York Giants reveal surprising QB plan during first week of OTAs

The New York Giants kicked off their first round of OTAs this week, with Wednesday’s practice open to the media. And it was revealing.

The Giants haven’t shared much about their 2025 quarterback plan, other than (hopefully) to give rookie Jaxson Dart a redshirt season behind veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.

We saw that plan come to fruition for the first time on the field, but it wasn’t as clear as you might expect.

According to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the breakdown of QB snaps went like this:

Russell Wilson: 15

Jameis Winston: 15

Jaxson Dart: 14

Tommy DeVito: 4

If you didn’t know better, you’d think Big Blue had an open quarterback competition. Remember: Wilson and Winston were signed this offseason, meaning they have as much work ahead of them to learn and execute coach Brian Daboll’s system as Dart does. Reps at this time of year are critically important to expedite that learning curve, so the fact they were so evenly distributed might suggest the pecking order isn’t as clear-cut as we’ve been led to believe.

Sure, it’s only one practice. And, yes, Wilson is a seasoned pro who’s played for three teams with three different offenses over the last few years. He should be a quick study, making offseason reps not nearly as crucial.

But they aren’t irrelevant.

“They’ll all get reps,” Daboll said Wednesday. “They’ll all get reps at various spots, so we’ve got a plan for that and we’ve been working that since they’ve been here, but they’ll all get reps.”

As for how Dart, one of the Giants’ two first-round picks, performed? Hughes noted a few highlights from the former Ole Miss star.

“Dart worked mostly with the backups, but did get three reps with the starters,” Hughes wrote. “The first provided the highlight of practice. He rolled out to the left, planted, threw a pass over the head of Okereke and into the hands of Hyatt in the back of the end zone. Impressive touch. He also had a roll out late in practice where he dove and reached the pylon – another touchdown. Not sure the coaches loved seeing him superman-dive for the end zone in a May practice, though.”

It’s only May, but it certainly feels like the New York Giants are headed for a QB collision course.
