All indications point to the Dallas Cowboys making the right decision by signing Micah Parsons to a long-term extension.
Parsons is well worth any dollar amount the Cowboys pay him, and if the team wants to compete in the foreseeable future, having him on their side could be the difference between winning a Super Bowl and missing the Playoffs.
Parsons is arguably the best defender in the NFL, and with the other contracts handed out this offseason, the Cowboys will only have to up their price.
The team is expected to get a deal done, but according to a recent report from Jon Machota of The Athletic, Dallas waiting to finalize a deal likely cost them.
“When the season ended, it appeared Parsons’ next deal might average between $35 million and $40 million per season. Now, it’s likely that his average annual salary will be at least $40 million,” Machota wrote.
Maxx Crosby, Myles Garrett, and Ja’Marr Chase all signed deals that show where the market is.

While Chase’s $40.25 million AAV contract over four seasons might be different due to him being a wide receiver, if Garrett wants to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, that could be something he looks for.
It isn’t likely that Parsons will get much more than what Chase got, but every dollar counts.
Not only for the superstar edge rusher, but for the Cowboys’ cap situation.
Still, this is the Cowboys, and it’s time Jerry Jones and the rest of the front office start acting like it.
Signing him would be a positive sign, and it should help the franchise for the next few years.
