Jaime Munguia will be allowed to resume his career after the BBBofC and UKAD have reportedly decided not to sanction him following his positive test for exogenous testosterone following his rematch with Bruno Surace on May 3, 2025, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Munguia’s 12-round unanimous decision win over Surace (26-1-2, 5 KOs) stands and won’t be reversed. The former WBO junior middleweight champion Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) had claimed his innocence, saying the positive test was the result of contamination or accidental ingestion of the banned substance.
Munguia’s Path to Legitimacy
There’s no word from Team Munguia whether they’ll fight Surace in a trilogy match. A third clash would be the logical move, given the positive test. Surance knocked out Munguia in the sixth round in their first fight on December 14, 2024, in Tijuana, Mexico. There was a rematch to allow Jaime to try to avenge the loss. Letting Surace get a chance to avenge his defeat would be the fair thing to do.

The Backlash from Boxing Fans
There was a minor backlash from fans today, following the news that Munguia had been given the “green light” to resume his career. The fans felt that Munguia should have been suspended and his victory over Surace overturned and ruled a no-contest.
Munguia, 28, is ranked #2 WBC and #4 WBO at super middleweight. He’s ranked high enough that he could get another title shot if he can get one or two solid wins under his belt. Jaime lost to then IBF, WBC, and WBO 168-lb champion Canelo Alvarez by a 12-round unanimous decision on December 14, 2024.
Path to a Title Shot
The best way for Munguia to strengthen his position to get a quick title shot would be for him to fight these 168-lb contenders to earn the spot:
