‘Much-loved character’: Man Utd steward of 25 years who received letter from Alex Ferguson dies after brain tumour fight

A MANCHESTER UNITED steward who received a letter of support from Sir Alex Ferguson has died after a brain tumour fight.

Brave Steven Brindley was a steward at United games for 25 years.

It was his dream job, with the “much-loved character” being a Red Devils super fan.

Steven was sadly given less than a year to live following his diagnosis in October 2023.

But he “bravely fought on” before passing away at the age of 65.

Steven was still serving as a steward at United up until last season.

He underwent numerous treatments but suffered a stroke, leaving half of his body paralysed.

Steven sadly died last Thursday after a brave two-year battle.

He had previously received a letter from legendary United boss Ferguson thanking him for his dedicated work as a steward.

Close family friend Nicky McCann told the Manchester Evening News: “He was such an amazing character.

“He was the salt of the earth. He would speak to anyone and was well-known through working at United and being born and bred in Chorlton.

“He was so passionate about United, and was a steward for 25 years, attending every home game and the away matches. His son James and daughter Michelle worked there too.

“Everybody knew him. He was a man of the community. He would work the games and travelled all over, but always be part of the atmosphere. You’d find him in the Railway afterwards having a pint.”

Steven’s family are now raising funds for his funeral send-off through donations made here.

Nicky added: “They are all such down to earth people and hard workers. They now have the admin of sorting out his send off.

“No donation is too small, and every message, share, and kind thought means the world.

“Every contribution will go toward giving him the farewell he deserves.

“One filled with love, laughter, and the colour red, a true reflection of the joy and passion he brought into all our lives.”
