Mikey Garcia predicts that the first punch Jose Ramirez lands on Devin Haney on May 2nd will bring back the memories of the beat down he suffered in his loss to Ryan Garcia last April.
Trigger Shy
“The former four-division world champion Mikey says Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will be ‘gunshy,’ leaving him afraid to throw for fear of being clipped by former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs).
Haney, 26, will be coming off a year-long layoff when he faces Ramirez in the co-feature bout on the Fatal Fury card at Times Square in New York City. Mikey feels that Devin picked the wrong fighter, choosing Ramirez, 32, as his comeback opponent because he hits too hard. He thinks Haney should have selected a fighter heading into retirement.
Given what happened to him in his last fight, the former two-division world champion Haney may have felt pressure to fight someone good. He’s received a lot of criticism from fans over the defeat and the lawsuit he initiated afterward. With all that, Devin likely felt he had to take on a talented guy like Ramirez.
“I think he’s going to be gunshy. He’s not going to exchange. He’s going to try and go the distance and box on the outside,” said Mikey Garcia to Little Giant Boxing about how Devin Haney will approach his fight against Jose Ramirez on May 2nd.
Haney will likely focus on throwing a lot of jabs and single punches like he did in his win over Regis Prgrais in 2023. He neutralized Prograis’s offense by boxing and clinching a lot. We saw the same from Haney in his two wins against Geoge Kambosos Jr. and his victory over Vasily Lomachenko.
The Wrong Choice?
“All it’ll take is one punch to bring back those memories and Jose has got it. He’s got the power, he’s got the size also. Haney can box, but after a beat down like that, it’s not easy coming back. We’ve seen it in many fighters, and I think that’s where we’re going to take advantage.
“I think Haney should have picked somebody else. Somebody that didn’t hit hard, that didn’t have the power. Somebody that was on the way out with two or three losses in his last four fights. Somebody that isn’t a threat. I think they picked the wrong fight,” said Mikey.
