Michael Carrick claims Manchester United won’t make Solskjaer-style ‘knee-jerk’ decision

MICHAEL CARRICK insists Manchester United will not make an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer-style “knee-jerk” change to his position as head coach.

Carrick was installed as head coach until the end of the season last month and has secured three wins from three games.

If United beat Tottenham at home on Saturday, it will be the first time since February 2024 that they have won four successive Premier League games.

Solskjaer was hired as caretaker manager in December 2018 and United embarked on a stunning eight-game winning run at the start of his stint.

United won 14 out of 19 games during Solskjaer’s caretaker tenure before he was installed as permanent manager in March 2019.

After that, United won only two of their final ten matches and were beaten six times as they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

United director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada are going through the process of identifying the club’s next permanent head coach for next season.

And Carrick is adamant the club will not change their plans and there would be “something wrong” if they did before the season ends on May 24.

He said: “Nothing’s changed, no. To be honest, it’s not going to change what I do or how I feel about it.

“I think I’m fully aware of the role I’m doing here and the responsibility I’ve got.

“We want to be successful. I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season, if that’s me, if that’s somebody else.

Carrick is under contract for the rest of this season

“At this stage, I can’t control that and we’ll see what happens. But it’s certainly about trying to improve the team and keep making Manchester United stronger and improving all the time.

“So nothing’s changed. The results of a short period of time don’t change that.

“If they have changed that then there is something wrong. It can’t be so knee-jerk either way, whether it’s really good, whether there’s a few issues we need to solve.

“It’s steady progress, really. You kind of know that football can twist and turn just as quickly.

“So we have got to keep level and keep focussing on what we need to do.

“I’m loving what I’m doing. I’m here, I feel at home here. But I fully understand the situation.

“So I’m not getting too carried away.”
