The rumors surrounding Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford have been heating up over the last couple of days. The Los Angeles quarterback was granted permission to speak to other teams late last week, and it appears conversations regarding at least a couple are ramping up.
Stafford, who signed a 4-year, $160 million contract with the Rams in 2022, threw for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season. But there’s no question that Stafford’s age, 37, is a factor in deciding whether the Rams want to give him a large extension. He is set to make $27 million in 2025, per his contract.
Let’s run through the latest trade rumors surrounding Stafford, teams he is linked to and the latest on his contract details.

Ian Rapoport also confirmed Pelissero’s reporting about speaking to other teams.
Per Sportrac, Stafford has a cap hit of $49,666,667 in 2025. His current contract takes him through 2026. The source also places Stafford’s market value at $41.8 million.
Sean McVay states Rams’ ‘first goal in mind’ is getting Stafford back
In appearing on Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andrew Whitworth’s podcast Fitz and Whit, McVay states that getting Stafford back in 2025 is the Rams’ “first goal in mind.”
“Our first goal in mind is to have [him] come back here as our quarterback”

“There’s no discrepancy on us wanting him to continue to lead the way and be our quarterback,” McVay said on the podcast, as transcribed by Bleacher Report. “The interesting and the challenging dilemma and dynamics within this are, ‘Hey, how do you continuously as a head coach look at the short term and the long term and be able to figure out what does that really look like?’ There is no dispute — and let’s not get it twisted in regarding to anybody wanting him to be our quarterback. Now, there’s layers to it. You have to be able to say, ‘Hey, how do we continuously build? How do we support him? How do we make sure that he’s getting what is his worth relative to those things?’”
“The first goal in mind is to have [him] come back here as our quarterback,” the head coach added
Giants making Stafford their ‘top priority’
Raanan, who is at the NFL Scouting Combine, reported that the Giants are apparently targeting Stafford.

Raiders and Giants reportedly interested in Stafford
Per The Athletic’s Russini, the Raiders and Giants have garnered interest in Stafford. She adds that she expects to price for Stafford to go up from Los Angeles, if he does in fact get traded:
Matthew Stafford’s exploration of his market value the last few weeks has indeed attracted significant interest from teams, notably the Raiders and the Giants, per sources.

Possible landing spots for Stafford
For now it appears as though the Giants and Raiders have emerged as possible landing spots for the quarterback. The Giants are in desperate need for a quarterback, after releasing Daniel Jones last season and having to pay him $22.2 million for his cap hit. The Giants struggled with backups Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito last season.
The Raiders are also in need of a quarterback, after shuffling between quarterbacks Aidan O’Connell, Gardner Minshew and Desmond Ridder last year. Minshew and O’Connell dealt with injuries last season as Las Vegas finished 4-13 and fired head coach Antonio Pierce at the end of the season.
If the Rams do trade Stafford, the Raiders might seem like the more favorable destination for Stafford. The quarterback hasn’t truly had to play as an outdoor passer at neither Detroit nor Los Angeles during his 16-year NFL career.
