But Mings lost his cool at former England team-mate Greenwood in angry scenes.
Mings was an unused sub away in Iceland in 2020 when the striker came off the bench for his solo Three Lions cap.
The ex-Manchester United man, 23, needlessly kicked out at Amadou Onana with a very late and ugly challenge.
The foul sent the midfielder tumbling to the turf.
And 18-cap Mings was clearly fuming with the brutal tackle which could have injured the Belgium international.
The centre-back, 32, picked up the ball and stormed over to a laughing Greenwood, who had already been confronted by Onana.
But the smile was soon wiped off his face as Mings grabbed his shirt and throttled Greenwood, before swinging him round.
Greenwood just about managed to keep his footing but was clearly rattled by the Villa captain’s heavy-handed response, which saw his shirt torn.
But the forward was protected from further punishment as his Marseille team-mates ran into the brawl.
And fans on social media reacted to the chaotic incident.
One said: “Tyrone Mings absolutely manhandling Mason Greenwood.”
Another wrote: “This is one of the reasons why we love him so much at the Villa.”
A third added: “What a man Tyrone Mings.”
A fourth typed: “Tyrone Mings is now my favourite player.”
A fifth commented: “My respect for Tyrone Mings has gone right up.”
Marseille ran out 3-1 winners at the Stade Velodrome.
Greenwood grabbed the opener after just five minutes – his seventh goal in pre-season – before John McGinn equalised.
But a double from ex-Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the win for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
Villa play Villarreal in their final warm-up game on Sunday before hosting Newcastle in the lunchtime kick-off next Saturday.
