Martin Tyler, 80, shuts down retirement claims as Sky Sports legend vows to commentate ‘until I fall off the gantry’

MARTIN TYLER has shut down retirement claims and vowed to commentate “until I fall off the gantry.”

The “voice of the Premier League” left his role at Sky Sports in June 2023 after 33 years as their lead commentator.

Fans were left saddened when Tyler’s contract was not renewed, with the veteran bringing them many memorable moments.

His most famous piece of commentary occurred on the final day of the 2011/12 season when Sergio Aguero netted a late winner to seal Man City’s first Premier League title.

And Tyler’s exit from Sky Sports sparked fears among the faithful that he was retiring for good.

However, the veteran, 80, has continued to work in football – last season Tyler returned to screens for Sky’s rival TNT Sports as he commentated on Benfica’s Champions League group stage win over Atletico Madrid.

He also lends his voice to Premier League Productions – while also hosting a podcast nearing 100 episodes.

And despite turning 80 in September, he has no plans to stop commentating.

Speaking on the In The Mixer podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, Tyler said: “My contract at Sky ran out, and they chose not to renew it – that’s entirely their right.

“I had over 30 wonderful years there, and I wouldn’t say a bad word about them. There was a suggestion that I was retiring which is not true at all.

“I’m still loving doing commentary and if I can continue to impart my love for the game through commentary, then I’ll do it until I fall off the gantry.”

Tyler also opened up on his famous “Aguerooooo” line when City pipped rivals Man United to the title.

Martin Tyler’s commentary of Kobbie Mainoo’s FA Cup final goal emerges

Roberto Mancini’s men trailed QPR 2-1 with minutes remaining before two goals at the death sealed a 3-2 victory and silverware.

Tyler added: “When it went 2-2, you knew that Manchester City scoring the winner could happen, and you’re just on your toes.

“I had no idea what I’d say or who would score the goal – it could have been [Eden] “DZEKOOOO.”

“I was lucky enough to meet Sergio [Aguero] and have a good chat with him about it.

“The one thing, which sounds very pompous to say, is that I knew he’d score before he knew he’d score because he took a touch.

“He’s Aguero, so the second touch was only going in one direction. It was amazing.”
