Martin declared fit for MotoGP test but will miss German Grand Prix

The injured reigning MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin has been medically cleared to test his Aprilia bike – but will miss the German Grand Prix in two weeks’ time.

Martin, who is currently locked in a contractual dispute with the Italian team, has been authorised to test on Thursday or Friday this week.

Aprilia, however, says it will make no decision about a test until after a further medical check next week.

While MotoGP medical director Angel Charte not only authorised the one-day test but insisted upon it, he ruled out a return at the next race in Germany on 11-13 July.

That means the earliest Martin might be allowed to resume racing would be the Czech Grand Prix one week later.

The Spaniard’s current state of health goes back to the Qatar Grand Prix in April, which was itself a comeback from previous injuries dating to pre-season testing and training accidents.

In Qatar, the only race Martin has contested in 2025, he fell on the Sunday and was run over by VR46 Ducati rider Fabio di Giannantonio. That left him in a Doha hospital for several days before he was able to return to Europe and continue his recovery.

Dr Xavier Mir’s report on Martin’s scaphoid, released by Aprilia on Monday, read: “Clinical progress is good, with nearly a full range of motion in the scaphoid.

“Right now the bone consolidation is not yet 100%, but the healing process is progressing positively, despite the repair not yet being fully complete.”

Aprilia also shared Charte’s assessment of Martin’s rib fractures, which read: “There is significant improvement in the fracture sites of most of the left rib injuries.

“Despite the notable progress, some of the fractures have not yet fully consolidated. The evolution is very positive, and on this basis two more weeks are needed for complete healing.”

The test, likely to take place at Misano, would be the first of its kind following a rule change allowing riders with long-term injuries a special test to assess their fitness.

The rule was first proposed by Aprilia ahead of Martin’s Qatar comeback, and after initial resistance by rival teams it was written into the regulations ahead of the French Grand Prix. Under the new rule, Martin would only be allowed three sets of tyres for the test.
