Marco Verde dismantled Guillermo Amilcar Hernandez Saldana with sustained body punching and precision combinations before forcing a fifth-round stoppage Saturday night at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.
The scheduled eight-round middleweight bout matched two prospects who had yet to lose as professionals. Verde, a 24-year-old Mexican southpaw and 2024 Olympic silver medalist, brought a 6-0 record into the ring. Hernandez, a 29-year-old Canadian fighting in the United States for the first time, arrived at 7-0.
Hernandez had talked about catching Verde during one imperfect moment. He spent most of the fight waiting for an opening that never developed.
Verde controlled the range immediately with his southpaw jab before driving hard shots into Hernandez’s body. One ringside observer counted more than 20 power punches to the midsection in the opening round. Hernandez continued advancing, but he struggled to get close enough to land anything meaningful.
The only strange sequence came in the third round when Verde went down and received a count. Replays showed Hernandez stepping on Verde’s lead foot, causing the Mexican prospect to lose his balance. California officials had access to replay but allowed the knockdown ruling to remain.
It made little difference to the fight itself.
Verde returned to his jab and body attack in the fourth, punishing Hernandez without taking much in return. Dan Rafael described Verde as “beating the absolute living shit” out of Hernandez through four rounds and argued that the contest should have been stopped earlier.
A ringside doctor examined Hernandez before the fifth. Verde attacked as soon as the action resumed, landing combinations against an opponent who was no longer producing enough offense or defending himself effectively. The referee stepped between them and ended the beating.
Verde (7-0, 4 KOs) gained his fourth professional stoppage, while Hernandez (7-1, 4 KOs) suffered his first defeat. The questionable knockdown will show on the official scoring, but it did nothing to alter Verde’s complete control of the fight.
