Man Utd stalwart delivers early verdict on £18m keeper Senne Lammens after Paul Scholes slammed ‘criminal offence’

MANCHESTER UNITED veteran Tom Heaton has given his early verdict on new goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Lammens, 23, joined the Red Devils in an £18million transfer on deadline day earlier this month.

Head coach Ruben Amorim was desperate to add another goalkeeper to his ranks after disappointing performances from Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir in recent months.

Despite only being at Carrington for a matter of weeks, the Belgian has already started to impress.

Club veteran Heaton gave a glowing review of Lammens while speaking to the Training Ground Guru podcast.

He explained: “It’s only been a few days training but he seems like a really good lad.

“He’s calm but [has] a strong personality.

“His goalkeeping fundamentals are very impressive and I think I said that to him after a couple of days training.

“Twenty-three years old coming into Manchester United, first few days training and he’s been very impressive so far.

“I really like his goalkeeping fundamentals.”

Despite Heaton’s positive comments, Paul Scholes recently suggested that Lammens is not up to standard.

On The Good, the Bad and the Football podcast, he said: “Incredible – but the price they paid tells me he’s not a top goalkeeper.

“They’ve got big problems in goal. Did it really take until that Grimsby game to realise Onana is not up to it?

“But Donnarumma is the biggest mistake I can see. As soon as he’s available, give PSG [Paris Saint-Germain] what they want. Look at the size of him – he reminds me of Peter Schmeichel.

“I hope they had a conversation and he said he didn’t want to come. It’s a criminal offence if the head of recruitment wasn’t in for him.

“Look at the size of the f*****. A good keeper can win you 15 points a season. I think he’s the signing of the transfer window.”

Meanwhile, Lammens’ brother, Tom, believed he made the wrong move by joining Man Utd and claimed he should have instead joined Turkish side Galatasaray.

In a recent interview, he explained: “There’s a lot of quality, you play for trophies there [at Galatasaray].

“And Senne could perhaps immediately make his mark in the Champions League.

“I was initially sceptical about a move to United, because many players there had already succumbed to the pressure and couldn’t reach their full potential.”

Lammens is yet to make his debut for the Red Devils, but given Heaton’s comments he could be in line for a start in the near future.
