ROY KEANE’S daughter Caragh has revealed how her battle with lupus inspired her to launch her own business, just years after the condition left her bed-bound.
The 29-year-old discovered she had the auto-immune disease in 2021 at the age of just 25 after suffering with blistered skin, painful joints and hair loss.
The teacher was left bed-bound by the debilitating symptoms and had to turn down her “dream job” at her old school in Manchester – which led her “mourning” the life she might have had.
Now Caragh, who is one of five children raised by Manchester United legend Keane and wife Theresa Doyle, is on the road to recovery.
She has launched her own gut-friendly cereal brand Superkeen and said her battle with illness inspired the creation of the product.
Caragh said her inability to play sport led her to research other ways to stay healthy, including ways to improve her gut health.
She told talkSport: “It was around five years ago. I started getting these symptoms, which ranged from really painful joints to hair loss and blistered skin.
“I thought it was because I was stressed at the time. I was teaching and I was thinking, ‘Oh, I’m just really tired’. I was falling asleep while I was driving and things like that.
“I was thinking, ‘God, this is a bit bizarre’. But I was just thinking,
‘Yeah, we’ll see how we go on. It must be stress’.
“Until I just physically couldn’t move and was essentially bed bound for around three months. So I wasn’t able to teach. And so I was always quite sporty and love being active.
“So it was a real shock when I just wasn’t able to do those things anymore and that kind of led me to start researching gut health and just overall wellness.
“I hadn’t heard of lupus before being diagnosed. So it’s one of those things where it was a real shock to hear that.”
Caragh has three sisters – Alanna, Shannon and Leah – and one brother Aidan.
The Keane kids were often kept out of the limelight when they were children but both of her parents have now been heavily involved in the launch of her business.
She added: “They’ve been so supportive. We’ve got a food event this weekend in Dublin.
“Me and mum go, we do all the food events. I love that part of it and chatting to people.
“They’ve been involved with every aspect of it from emotional support and checking on me.
“They’re saying, ‘How are you getting on?’ And I love spending time with my family. So I drag them along to these food events.”
Last year pundit Keane shared boxes of Superkeen with colleagues Gary Neville and Ian Wright while recording the Stick to Football podcast.
He said: “My daughter Caragh has got a company with health stuff. I am proud, very proud.”
Wright replied: “I’m really pleased because of what she’s gone through and, I’m not just saying it, it tastes good. I’m really pleased for her.”
