Man Utd ‘bomb squad’ could make shock return to squad as Sancho, Garnacho, Antony and Malacia struggle to find new clubs

RUBEN AMORIM insists that there may yet be a future at Manchester United for any of his infamous “bomb squad” that don’t make it out of Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia are all in limbo as they look to move on – boss Amorim having opened the door for all of them to leave.

Sancho has turned down Roma, the same Italian club are interested in Malacia, Garnacho is still hoping Chelsea will come in for him and Antony wants to go back to Real Betis after spending the second half of the season on loan there.

But there are no guarantees that all or even any of them will be gone by the close of the British transfer window on September 1.

Yet Amorim offers hope to any who find themselves still at United a day later – hinting clearly that they would then be brought in from the cold.

He declared: “It’s clear these players want to play in different clubs – so we have to try to make arrangements so we are both happy and they are happy.

“But when the window is closed we have to receive the players (any who do not leave) and so then anything can.”

Garnacho, especially, will find such an assurance odd given that at the end of last season a furious Amorim told him to “pray that he can find another club.”

But United are still awaiting bids for all four that they could live with – even for the sale of a player like Antony, who cost £85M from Ajax three years ago but is no longer rated, at more than half that price.

Amorim and director of football Jason Wilcox still want more players having already signed Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko and Diego León for almost £200M.

Man Utd’s transfer deals

IN

  • Bryan Mbeumo – from Brentford – £71m
  • Matheus Cunha – from Wolves – £62.5m
  • Diego Leon – from Cerro Porteno – £7m
  • Benjamin Sesko – from RB Leipzig – £74m

TOTAL – £214.5m

OUT

  • Victor Lindelof – released
  • Christian Eriksen – released

TOTAL – £0m

A new goalkeeper is also a target following last season’s mistake-ridden shows by No1 Andre Onana while Altay Bayinder dropped the early clanger that gave Arsenal a 1–0 win in last Sunday’s season opener.

The club started out this summer supposedly strapped for cash after warnings last year from part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe about the massive cost-cutting he instigated were crucial with the club in dire financial circumstances.

How Arsenal survived Man Utd’s attacks with ‘forcefield defence’

Yet more money has been conjured up and Amorim vows that whether any or all of that bomb squad remain, their sales or otherwise won’t impact on plans to bring in new talent.

He said: “It’s not the idea that these guys are going to leave and (then) we’ll get other players.

“We are not waiting to take out someone to bring in another player.”

Amorim must now make a judgement on whether he sticks with Bayindir or goes back to Onana for Sunday’s visit to Fulham, saying: “Onana is ready to play – but he was also ready last week.”
