Man Utd begin major change to Old Trafford with new-look stadium not to be completed for a month

MANCHESTER UNITED are ramping up the return of proper old-school atmospheres by doubling safe standing at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have kicked off work to install 6,000 extra rail seats in Tier 2 of the iconic Stretford End.

It will take the total to over 11,000 safe standing spots, making the Theatre of Dreams one of the Premier League’s biggest safe standing arenas.

The move comes as part of the club’s mission to improve the matchday experience and turn up the volume inside the stadium.

Fans will get their first look at the new section in the upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Sunderland.

But while the seats will be physically in place, the area will still be classed as seated for that game.

That’s because the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) needs to give formal approval for standing to be allowed.

United bosses expect all installation work to be wrapped up by the end of October.

Once approved, the section will be fully transformed into a licensed safe standing zone.

Safe standing has been widely praised across football for boosting atmosphere and improving safety.

Rail seating allows fans to stand behind barriers without the risks of the old terrace days.

It also gives supporters the chance to sing, chant and support their team as one just like the old-school matchday experience.

How Amorim’s chess move with de Ligt outsmarted Maresca

Club insiders say the move is all part of a bigger plan to make Old Trafford feel like a fortress again.

And with thousands more voices standing shoulder to shoulder, the Stretford End could soon be rocking like it’s 1999.

On the pitch, the players eased pressure on manager Ruben Amorim by beating Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford.

They will now hope that they can kick start their season from there and go on a run with games against Brentford and Sunderland coming up next.
