Man Utd 3 Burnley 2: Fernandes converts controversial 97th-minute penalty to snatch undeserved first win of the season

BRUNO FERNANDES held his nerve to score a stoppage time penalty and hand Manchester United a much-needed first win of the season.

The captain missed from 12 yards at Fulham last week, while his team also crashed out of the Carabao Cup in a midweek shoot-out.

But when United were handed a controversial spot-kick here he stepped up and beat Martin Dubravka.

And the most relieved man in the stadium was boss Ruben Amorim who was facing up to an uncomfortable international break.

He got the response he wanted from his team after the disaster at Grimsby but his team twice blew the lead against Scott Parker’s newly-promoted Clarets.

And it looked like they would head into the two-week break on the back of another disappointment – until they got a helping hand from VAR.

The home side thought they had a penalty early on as Kyle Walker was closed down by Mason Mount and the defender bundled his England team-mate to the ground.

Referee Sam Barrott pointed to the spot but after a lengthy VAR review the decision was overturned.

It didn’t put United out of their stride and they were ahead just before the half hour mark.

Casemiro nodded a Bruno Fernandes free-kick against the bar and the rebound smacked against Josh Cullen.

Martin Dubravka clawed the ball away but the official was told it had already crossed the line.

It was scrappy but Amorim and the United fans would not care one bit.

Typically, though, a set-back soon followed.

Recent arrival Matheus Cunha pulled up while chasing a long ball forward and immediately signalled that he had to go off.

It looked like a hamstring which would make him a doubt for the Manchester derby in two weeks.

United had chances to put the game to bed as Mount’s header from Mbeumo’s corner bounced on top of the bar.

Then a Bruno Fernandes corner was met by a sweet Amad volley but was too close to Dubravka.

A rapid break saw sub Joshua Zirkzee and Mbeumo link up but Amad blazed a golden chance over the bar.

But they only had the one goal and we’ve seen this kind of game before and sure enough the Clarets hit back.

Lyle Foster was unmarked as Bruun Larsen crossed from the right and stretched out a leg to stab home.

Yet straight from the kick-off, the home side restored their lead as Diogo Dalot bustled his way to the byline.

He pulled it back and picked out Mbeumo who swept home from close range – just 15 seconds after the kick off.

Yet the drama was not finished there as Foster went round Altay Bayindir and scored – only for the linesman’s flag to go up.

A VAR check showed it was extremely tight but proved the official was right.

Credit to Burnley though, they came back again and levelled as sub Loum Tchaouna saw a shot parried by Bayindir.

The rebound fell to Jaidon Anthony who forced home via a deflection off Kobbie Mainoo who had come on at half-time.

Scott Parker seemed to settle for a point as the home side pushed forward but they struggled to find a winner.

Benjamin Sesko landed his header on top of the bar as he got on the end of Mbeumo’s cross and then flashed another one past the post.

Just when it looked as though all was lost, Anthony tugged the shirt of Amad and after a review the ref gave the penalty.

Fernandes kept his cool and although Dubravka went the right way his penalty just had enough on it.
