Floyd Schofield vs. Tevin Farmer is possible for the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28th. The unbeaten Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) had been in talks for a fight against Lucas Bahdi, but the negotiations fizzled out.
@DanRafael1 reports that his sources say there’s a good chance the Schofield-Farmer fight gets made for the June 28th card. This would be a risky fight for the untested 22-year-old Schofield to take at this early stage of his five-year pro career. He didn’t look good in his last fight, getting dropped in the 11th round by Rene Tellez Giron last November.
Schofield received a lot of criticism from fans for pulling out of his title fight last February against WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. That fight would have seen Floyd get a nice payday. Some boxing fans believe he got cold feet at the last minute, lost his nerve, and pulled out with the excuse of being ill.
Sink or Swim Time?
Golden Boy’s decision to allow Schofield to take on the former IBF super featherweight champion Farmer (33-8-1, 8 KOs) has a sink-or-swim feel. In other words, if Schofield loses, it’s possible Golden Boy could jettison him, seeing him as a lost cause and not worth putting any more time into building him.
Farmer came close to beating William Zepeda in his last two fights in grueling contests. Tevin took and dished out a lot of punishment. Before that, Farmer lost a tough 10-round unanimous decision against Raymond Muratalla in July last year. Although he lost the fight against Muratalla, he made him look bad by landing a lot of shots and making him miss with his right-hand shots.
Schofield’s fight against Giron should have been enough for Golden Boy to give up on because he looked so average. But the strange pull-out from his fight against Shakur has to have created doubt in the minds of Golden Boy’s top brass about whether Schofield has got the toughness to be worth keeping on board. When a fighter is soft, promoters must dump them overboard to focus on fighters with the required spark to succeed.
